A primary cause of children missing school is illness from malnourishment and polluted water. The programs under our 'Nourish to Learn' banner support children and families who are impacted by a lack of food security. Under these programs, we provide emergency food relief to families suffering immediate food crisis, and help families to build their own source of long-term sustainable food.
A FOOD PACK CONTAINS 1-MONTH'S SUPPLY OF RICE, DRIED NOODLES, TINNED FISH, FISH SAUCE, SOY SAUCE, FLOUR, SUGAR AND SEASONINGS
Our Emergency Food Packs are provided to families who are in immediate food crisis. These food staples will underpin the few leafy greens and vegetables that families collect from local waterways or around the community.
Many families in the community suffer under immense economic hardship, and this has been exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic. At the best of times, these families struggle to keep food on the table. Sadly, with extended shutdown of workplaces, repeated lockdowns, and illness and death of key family members, the pandemic has made their situation dire.
Our emergency food packs help families through their immediate food crisis while longer-term measures are put in place to establish a more sustainable food source, such as our Sustainable Poultry program.
OUR SUSTAINABLE POULTRY PROGRAM DELIVERS ALL THE NECESSARY BIRDS, MATERIALS AND TRAINING FOR FAMILIES TO START AND MAINTAIN THEIR OWN SUSTAINABLE POULTRY FARM.
Chicken and quail are easy to keep, cheap to feed and provide a good source of protein, through both their meat and eggs. Selected on the basis of need, each family receives 5 chickens & 1 rooster (fully vaccinated), 50 quail, a chicken coop, a quail cage, feed for 2 months, and training on the care, maintenance and breeding of the birds.
Families are rewarded almost immediately with eggs for daily use and ongoing breeding. As stock numbers increase, older birds provide fresh meat to supplement the families' meals. The quail are provided as a more immediate meat source, giving the chickens time to mature and breed. All of this is achieved around the families' homes - the birds don't need a lot of space and the by-products can be composted to enrich the soil for growing vegetables.
