Building Brighter Futures Foundation works with two rural communities near Siem Reap, Cambodia. These communities, like so many in Cambodia, have high levels of illiteracy and lack basic services, causing poverty to become more entrenched with each generation. We support children and families in these communities to obtain vital education that will give them a chance to find and access better employment opportunities around Siem Reap and hopefully build long and successful careers.
Siem Reap is the centre for hospitality, tourism and associated service industries in Cambodia and has the potential to provide much employment and increasing prosperity to its surrounding population provided education is accessible.
The rural community of Prey Thom is located in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. It comprises 7 villages totalling approximately 138 families with an average of 6-9 children per family. The local Primary School offers education from Grades 1 to 6, but access to that education is difficult for the many poverty-stricken families in the community.
A majority of the adult population has no education or vocational training, thus limiting access to reliable and better-paid employment. This makes it difficult for the community to rise above its subsistence based existence and creates pressures within families because parents are forced to travel far away to find work
Sra Srong community comprises 5 villages of approximately 30 very poor families each, with an average of 4-6 children per family. There are no services and access is via sandy tracks that flood during the wet season.
Sra Srong is a basket weaving community, a craft carried on by the women to generate income. Baskets are sold to traders, when they occasionally pass, for around $1 each. There is no industry in the area, so the men search surrounding areas for work as construction labourers or farm hands. Work is inconsistent and lowly paid, with the average daily income being around $5.
